A few of us have decided to put together a "New years challenge blog" for weight loss/ heathy eating type stuff.
I'm thinking maybe a once a week weigh in. You don't have to post your weight, just what you lost/gained or didn't and inches if you want to also.
If you want, a goal check-in then too. Like my goal is to drink at least 80 oz of water every day, start eating better foods and cut High fructose corn syrup out of all of our foods.
I was also thinking, anybody who wanted to could join in a "money pot". For every weigh in you gain weight, you add $5 to the pot. If you stay the same as the week before, you put $2 in. Then at the end the person who loses the most weight gets the pot. Just an Idea. Not everyone would have to do it if they wanted. The "pot" could be a paypal account.
If anybody would like to do this with us, let me know as the blog will be private and so I can add you to the author list. If you're not intrested in weight loss but have a different challange that you'd like to do, feel free. I would also work for spending challenges, etc. I might just do that one along with the weight one. I know Wade would like it. Lol!
If you do want to do it, I'll need your email address to add you to the author list so you can either leave it in the comment section or email it to me at layna_29@yahoo.com
The blog will be ready to go by New years.

Rant *On*
Remember this? http://dalaynam.blogspot.com/2008/12/high-fructose-corn-syrup.html
It was just a few days ago. There was a comment left there last night that's the cause for this post.
So just as a warning: I'm getting up on my soapbox. Hehe.
First: If you leave a comment on my blog, I'd really appreciate it if you at least signed your name, let me know where you came from if you don't usally post here!!
If you leave a comment and don't sign in or leave your name because you don't want people to know who said it or "start something" Why??? If you're going to say something, be able to stand behind it.
I'd hate to have to go private, but somtimes I feel like it when I realize that people who aren't willing to let me know who they are are looking at my stuff. I have pictures of my Daughter on here. It just bugs me.
I don't mind at all when people post here when they let me know who they are. I think it's cool when people say "Hey, I came over from your Mom's blog" or "I know so-and-so and thought I'd check out your blog".
Second: (To the commenter:) Really?? This was the comment: http://www.hfcsfacts.com/ its really no worse than sugar... its all about quntity"
Yes, it's all about quntity, but it's in everything and there's no denying that Americans have too much of it.
And I'm sorry, but it isn't "no worse than sugar". Show me some facts becides what *THEY* have on *THEIR* website and from studys that weren't funded by *THEM* and then I might listen to what you have to say. But just posting *THEIR* website to back you up? Sorry, it doesn't convince me.
Becides the quotes and links I have on that post, here's another one.
"The medical profession thinks fructose is better for diabetics than sugar," says Dr. Field, "but every cell in the body can metabolize glucose. However, all fructose must be metabolized in the liver. The livers of the rats on the high fructose diet looked like the livers of alcoholics, plugged with fat and cirrhotic."
Again... Really??
And my claim that studys that showed it is "No worse than sugar" and stuff that's all over their website are funded by the company or people that have an intrest in it?? Check this out. (About the HFCS group trying to say that it's just the same as sugar,)
"To get that message out, the campaign relies on nutritional research. But CBS News has learned that funding for many of the major studies came from companies with a financial stake in the outcome.
Of the six studies CBS News looked at on the association’s Web site that "Confirm High Fructose Corn Syrup [is] No Different From Sugar," three were sponsored by groups that stand to profit from research that promotes HFCS. Two were never published so their funding sources are unclear. And one was sponsored by a Dutch foundation that represents the interests of the sugar industry.
Pepsi funded one study, so did a D.C. based lobbying group that gets their money from food, chemical and drug companies. And the American Beverage Association gave a grant for another.
One researcher who was involved in three of the studies, Dr. James M. Rippe, a cardiologist and founder of the Rippe Lifestyle Institute says there is no link between HFCS and obesity and calls contrary evidence "accusations" and "speculation."
Rippe’s ties with industry are no secret. Pepsico, Tropicana and Quaker among others are all listed as Rippe Health Partners on his Web site along with this quote: "The RLI research team conducts multiple studies of mutual interest to RLI and PepsiCo North America in topics such as short-term energy regulation response to high fructose corn syrup…"
(All from CBS website: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/01/cbsnews_investigates/main4491513.shtml )
Ahhh... That feels better. Honestly, I don't mind a good debate. So if you want... bring it on. Lol!! Honestly, I mean this in all good. I don't even know who I'm talking to! LOL!!
I was going to post pictures of my darling little girl today. I've got some pretty cute ones. But now you are all going to have to wait for another day. All because of this. Haha!
I wonder if anybody is even going to take the time to read this? hehe.

Everyone on earth should see this. It's that important. And please pass it on- You can link back to here, post it on your own blog or pass it on in an email.

Once in the slideshow, use the scroll bar on the right side of the screen to scroll through.
Thanks to Mom for sending it to me!
Wade and I have, for the most part, been plastic bag free for about 9 months now.
Our grocery store has nice sturdy cardboard boxes you can buy for .99 and every time you use them you get a .10 discount for each one. We also bought two of the .99 re-usable bags that the grocery stores have. The only time we've used plastic bags is when we bought so many grocerys that we needed a few, or have run to the store when we don't have the boxes/bags with us.
This is a great website: http://www.reusablebags.com/
It's where we've gotten Jessi's Kleen Kanteen (It's awsome and the most leak-proof sippy that we've found.) I refuse to get her any sippy's that have BPA in them.
That website is also where Jessi & Wade are getting their "Christmas presents" from. (shhh... ;) )
Anyways, that's my earth-friendly update for today ;)

High-Fructose corn syrup
When Mom was here, she was wondering about HFCS. I wasn't able to answer all the questions, so I've been looking it up.
Here's some links I found and a few quotes that I thought might answer some of her questions. ;)
"There is a correlation between the rise of obesity in the U.S. and the use of HFCS for sweetening beverages and foods. While HFCS is not toxic, it is the bodies' reaction to this particular sugar that raises questions of its safety. HFCS is not recognized by the body in the same way natural fruit and cane sugars are recognized; triggering an enzyme that gives the feeling of "fullness". As a result, a person can consume a much larger amount of calories without satisfaction. Obesity Rates have increased in the United States (the world's largest consumer of HFCS) since the introduction of this sweetener. Critics of HFCS point out the direct correlation between percentages of increased usage of HFCS in foods and obesity rates in the United States over three decades."
"HFCS has the exact same sweetness and taste as an equal amount of sucrose from cane or beet sugar but it is obviously much more complicated to make, involving vats of murky fermenting liquid, fungus and chemical tweaking, all of which take place in one of 16 chemical plants located in the Corn Belt. Yet in spite of all the special enzymes required, HFCS is actually cheaper than sugar. It is also very easy to transport--it's just piped into tanker trucks. This translates into lower costs and higher profits for food producers."
"Sucrose is composed of glucose and fructose. When sugar is given to rats in high amounts, the rats develop multiple health problems, especially when the rats were deficient in certain nutrients, such as copper. The researchers wanted to know whether it was the fructose or the glucose moiety that was causing the problems. So they repeated their studies with two groups of rats, one given high amounts of glucose and one given high amounts of fructose. The glucose group was unaffected but the fructose group had disastrous results. The male rats did not reach adulthood. They had anemia, high cholesterol and heart hypertrophy--that means that their hearts enlarged until they exploded. They also had delayed testicular development. Dr. Field explains that fructose in combination with copper deficiency in the growing animal interferes with collagen production. (Copper deficiency, by the way, is widespread in America.) In a nutshell, the little bodies of the rats just fell apart. The females were not so affected, but they were unable to produce live young."

So there you have it. If you care to read it. :)
HFCS is everywhere. Not just soda and juice, but also Ketchup, cereal's, Jams, bread, etc.
If people had a minute, I'm wondering if you'd go through your kitchens and find how many things you had that has HFCS in it, and let me know. It'd be intresting.
Then again, I wouldn't be suprised if some people hardly had any, especially those that make alot of their own stuff.

What we did Thanksgiving weekend
I don't have much pictures of our actual Thanksgiving weekend, but if you want to see some you can look at Moms Blog (Because I spent the whole weekend using her camera instead of mine. Hehe.)
Dad & Mom came up and brought Meshayla, Morgen, Kara & Kaela. Our first family company in our house :)
Jon & Sara come over for dinner on Thanksgiving, then we all just hung around while mom cleaned up. (Hey, it was her idea.) Then we all went to Dave & Becky Birchill's and played basketball and had supper there.
On Friday we had the brilliant idea to go shopping. We knew it was going to be horrible, but it was the only day we had since Dad & Mom were leaving on Sat. We met up with Sara who got off work early and went to Kohls and Joann's fabric, but didn't buy anything there because the lines were so long. Then we went to Pout Baby Boutique and Jessi got a new puzzle (She LOVES puzzles) from Daddy and a big flower for her headbands from Papa & Grammy.
After that we went to Jonny Carino's for lunch. (YUM!)
Then we headed to the Home depot to buy the paint for Jessi's room!! Dad is a really good painter and we had talked him into doing it for us ;) Good thing, because he had it all done in the amount of time that I would have had it all taped and drop clothed.
We got home in time to watch the Husker game! What a good game it was!! While I would have loved us to just smash Colorado, A close game is always exciting. I really wanted Jessi's room done so I helped Dad part of the time, but we had turned the radio on in there so I didn't miss any :)
So we had a good weekend :) Here's some pictures of Miss Jessi's room.
Before:
After the paint:
The rocking horse down in the bottom was made by Wade's grandpa.
Picture frame from Lanae :) This picture was when Jessi was 2 days old.
The slip on the wall was from Jessi's Auntie Laura. I had a slip just like this and had my pictures taken in it.
Picture frame from Roxie. Picture of Jessi at 8 weeks, Papa (McKnight) was holding her.

Afghan on the crib was made by Laura. It was the inspiration for the paint colors. It was one of my favorite gifts and Jessi sleeps with it on her every night.
Close up of the letters. I made these. That makes them special, right?? :D

Jessi kept trying to sneak upstairs to watch/help Papa paint. She thought it looked like so much fun. Sunday she got ahold of a paint brush and was trying to paint stuff.
And just because I have to. Lol. Jessi got in trouble on Saturday, so she got stood in the corner.
She was just bawling because of it. But when she got done she went and gave her Daddy a hug. All was forgiven. :)

Big BOOO on the FDA
http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE4AO9FZ20081125?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews
Melamine is what was found in all that pet food that killed a ton of pets, and what has been
found in the formula in China that's made thousands of children fall ill and several have died.
I just LOVE that they say there's absolutely no risk.
It doesn't matter HOW much it is! It SHOULDN'T be in there in the first place!!!!!
I just love how the FDA was all "no amount is safe" when it was China only, but now that it's in the US formula, traces amounts are just fine.
The FDA has been such a joke lately. Last time it was the BPA that they were saying "Oh yeah, it's safe, no problem." And now this.
Just another reason I'm glad I breastfeed Jessi.
But some mom's aren't as lucky to get to. And some babies aren't as lucky as to get breastmilk, for whatever reason.
Anyways, Big BOO on the FDA!

I'm glad Mom & Dad are coming....
Because then if Sara goes into labor this weekend, I'll have a babysitter. :D Hehe.
(Sara's asked me If I'd go with them to the hospital if she goes into labor before her mom comes.
Woo hoo! :D )

Motrin and babywearing
I love babywearing. Very much. Infact, I'm pretty sure it saved my life a time or two. ;)
Forget the fact that it makes for a great bonding experiance for mother and baby, forget that it can help a newborn adjust to being "out in the wild" the first little while easier (It will feel more like they're still in the belly), That it reduces infant crying, That it's good for babies mental & emotional development, That it can promote healthy digestion (Carrying an infant upright massasages the abdomen). These are all proven facts and there's so many more.
Forget about those. It's all about the lazy mom. I am a proud lazy mom. I wore/wear my baby so I don't have to carry her around when she's fussy and wants to be held. I wear her so I can have my hands free to do other stuff. I wore her because it was much easier to breastfeed in public if she was in a carrier. (Breastfeeding is another lazy mom trait. I was too lazy to get up in the middle of the night , to get up from my book or from relaxing to get a bottle. )
Well, maybe those first reasons also played into me wanting to wear my baby. Fact is, it's just better all around!
So yesterday I found out that Motrin came out with a new ad targeting babywearing moms.
There was such a firestorm about it, they took the ad down, but you can see it here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmykFKjNpdY
And the statement from motrin after: https://www.motrin.com/
I'm sorry, but it's a horrible ad. If you find the right kind of carrier for you and wear it right, there's not going to be pain. Maybe after (quite) awhile, the baby will feel heavy. But you shouldn't feel pain - from wearing your baby.
And saying that mom's wear their baby's because it makes them look cool, or they think it makes them real moms??? Whatever.
Show a mom carrying her baby around all day in her arms or in the carseat.. That will give you some pain!
Anyways, here's a funny "alternative" ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpqpAGLS2t4
And a few pictures of me (and Wade) wearing my baby ;) (Ok... so maybe you can't see *me* in alll of them.. :D)

The things we eat
So as everybody knows, I’m somebody who’s pretty concerned with what’s in the stuff we eat.
Wade & I try to get the best stuff possible for our budget when we go grocery shopping. Luckly, we have a great grocery store here that carries a lot of all natural/organic stuff for a reasonable price.
But the hard part is, especially when you’re on a budget, how to know what stuff is the most "important" to try to get naturally.
Ideally, we’d love to get everything. But that’s just not possible for us when a lot of this stuff is more expensive than the pesticide, chemical full stuff.
I found a good list that shows fruits and veggies ranked from the most pesticide used, to the least. That’s kind of showed us what’s more important to get than other stuff, especially when it comes to stuff that Jessi eats.
You can find it here: http://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php
And that's all for today because I don't have any pictures ;)
